History

There used to be a PTT office on the spot where Residentie Pieter de Hooch now stands. Construction work on the building started in 1996.
In that year, the first purchase letters of intent were also signed.
Completion of the complex was planned for autumn 1998.

Due to protests against the construction by local residents and setbacks during construction, the first residents did not receive the keys to their new apartment until September 2000.

Two renowned Amsterdam architectural firms were responsible for the design of the apartment building, namely:
- Cees Dam and Partner
- Zaanen Spanjers architecten c.s.

Zaanen Spanjers are, among others, the designers of the concert hall in the Berlagebeurs. The Stopera complex is one of the many remarkable creations by Cees Dam and Partners. This office was also responsible for the design of the NH hotel Museum Quarter adjacent to Residentie de Hooch.
The constructor of the building is Bureau Bekker & Stroband BV from Amsterdam.
